Double Hammock: How to Pick One for Two People

Two people in one hammock is not twice the hammock. It is a different piece of furniture with different rules: the fabric has to carry more weight, the spread has to be wider, and the person on the inside has to be able to get out without tipping the other one onto the floor.

Most double hammocks sold online are really one-and-a-half. This guide covers how to tell the difference before you buy, what the weight ratings actually mean, and the set-up mistakes that make a two-person hammock uncomfortable even when the measurements are right.

What «double» actually means

There is no standard. A double hammock can be 60 inches wide, 78 inches wide, or anything between, and the width is what decides whether two adults fit side by side. Length matters too, but width is where the marketing gets loose.

WidthWhat it really fitsTypical label
48–55 inOne adult comfortably, two children«Single» or «double»
58–66 inTwo adults sitting, one lying across«Double»
70–80 inTwo adults lying side by side«Double XL» or «family»

If the listing does not state the width in inches, that is the answer: assume it is on the narrow side.

Weight rating: read the fine print

A 400-pound rating usually means 400 pounds total, not per person, and it is tested on a static load. Two adults moving around is a dynamic load, so a hammock rated 400 pounds is comfortable for two people who add up to about 300.

Fabric matters as much as the number. Woven cotton feels better and breathes, but it stretches and stays stretched. Nylon and polyester hold their shape and dry faster, but they are slicker and less forgiving on bare skin. A cotton-poly blend is the usual compromise.

Length and hang angle

Double hammocks run 10 to 13 feet end to end. The longer ones are more comfortable because they let you lie diagonally, which is how you get a flat position instead of the banana curve. A short double forces both people into the middle and into each other.

Hang it with about 30 degrees of sag: the anchor points roughly 4 to 4.5 feet up, and the hammock dipping so the lowest point is 15 to 18 inches off the ground. Flatter than that and you slide together; tighter and the fabric digs into your shoulders.

Straps, stands and anchors

  • Tree straps should be at least 1 inch wide. Rope damages bark and slips in rain.
  • Stands for doubles need a longer frame and a wider base than single stands. A 10-foot stand will hold a double, but it will feel cramped and the base may tip when both people sit at once.
  • Wall anchors are the most space-efficient option indoors, but they have to go into studs or masonry, not drywall.

Mistakes that ruin the experience

  • Buying by the word «double» instead of by width in inches.
  • Hanging it too tight, which makes two people roll into the center.
  • Using a single stand with a double hammock and wondering why it tips.
  • Leaving a cotton hammock out in the rain; it mildews and the smell does not come out.

Frequently asked questions

Can two adults sleep overnight in a double? In a 70-inch-wide hammock, yes, if both are average build and the hammock is hung with proper sag. Narrower than 66 inches, it is a nap, not a night.

Is a double hammock safe for one person? Yes. It is just roomier, and some people prefer the extra fabric.

Do I need a bigger stand for a double? Yes. Look for a stand rated for the combined weight and with a base wide enough that it does not lift when someone sits on one end.

Cotton or nylon for a couple? Cotton if it stays under cover and comfort matters most; nylon if it lives outdoors or travels.
